I’m Dave with KM Tool Supply, and I’m here to show you an exciting new product from KYOCERA. It’s a turning insert for both Swiss and conventional lathes. It looks like a CCMT, but it has four corners, which potentially out of the box can double your tool life.

It comes in two different grades, one for stainless and one for steels. The stainless grade can also do high-temperature alloys. The holders come in both metric and standard sizes. Let’s take a look at a customer that has implemented this tool shop-wide because of its cost savings.

I’m at a Swiss machine shop in Walworth County with Dave Lee. Dave, you run this insert in a lot of different materials. Name some of those materials that this insert works well in.

Most of the materials that we’ve worked on are 303, 316, 17-4, 440, and some titanium.

Okay. Unlike a CCMT insert, this insert is ground, which allows you to hold better tolerances. What kind of tolerances are you holding?

A lot of the jobs being run are holding plus or minus [tolerance figure unclear]. Some obviously a little more, but [figure unclear] has been the best.

Okay. This will also allow you to hold tighter finishes, being ground. What kind of finishes are you holding?

Some of those jobs running on 303 material in particular are holding a 32 or better finish on the job.

Excellent. What about chip control?

On the 303 and the other jobs, we’ve noticed good chip control on it, a nice curled chip, so it’s not wrapping on the part. It’s done well for us that way.

There you have it. If you’re interested, please call KM Tool Supply.
